How does a legitimate talent agency make money?

A legitimate talent agency earns a commission — typically 10–20% — only when a talent is successfully booked for a paid job. The agency never makes money before you do. If an agency asks you to pay upfront fees for registration, listing, headshots, or 'representation packages,' that is a major red flag.

What is the difference between a talent agency and a talent management company?

A talent agency (in regulated states) is a licensed entity that directly solicits employment for talent — they pitch you to clients and negotiate contracts. A management company provides career development, coaching, branding, and connects talent to licensed booking partners. SLMTA operates as a management company in regulated states and works with licensed partner agencies for all procurement in those markets.

What does 'boutique agency' mean?

A boutique agency is a smaller, selective firm that works with a limited roster of talent. Unlike large agencies that represent hundreds of models, a boutique agency gives each talent more direct access to directors, more personalized career guidance, and more focused placement efforts. SLMTA is intentionally boutique — we would rather develop ten careers deeply than manage a hundred superficially.

What is SAG-AFTRA and does it matter for models?

SAG-AFTRA is the Screen Actors Guild — American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, the union that covers on-camera performers in film, TV, and commercials. For models who want to do union commercial work, SAG-AFTRA affiliation matters. SLMTA works with both union and non-union talent depending on the project and market.

What are 'digitals' and why do agencies ask for them?

Digitals (also called 'polaroids') are simple, unretouched photos taken against a plain background with natural lighting and minimal styling. They show your natural look — height, proportions, skin, and features — without the distraction of heavy makeup, filters, or professional lighting. Agencies use digitals to evaluate your natural potential, not your ability to hire a photographer.

Do I need professional photos to apply?

Accepted Answer

No. In fact, overly retouched or heavily styled photos can work against you at the scouting stage. We want to see your natural look. A smartphone camera in good natural light against a plain wall is all you need. Save the professional portfolio for after you have signed with an agency.

Question 7

What measurements does SLMTA require?

Accepted Answer

We ask for height, bust/chest, waist, hips, shoe size, and eye and hair color. These are standard industry measurements used to match talent to specific bookings. You do not need to meet any specific size to apply — different divisions and markets have different requirements, and we represent talent across a wide range of looks and sizes.

How long does it take to hear back after applying?

Please allow 2–3 weeks for our directors to review your application. We review every submission personally. If you are selected to move forward, you will receive an email from an @slmta-agency.com address. We do not send rejections via social media or text message.

Question 9

Can minors apply?

Accepted Answer

Yes. SLMTA represents talent from age 5 through adult. All applicants under 18 must have a parent or legal guardian complete and co-sign the application. A parent or guardian must be present at all in-person meetings and must provide written consent before any booking is confirmed.

Question 10

How do I know if a talent agency is legitimate?

Accepted Answer

Legitimate agencies: (1) never charge upfront fees for representation, (2) earn commission only when you get booked, (3) communicate from official corporate email addresses, (4) have a verifiable business registration, (5) never pressure you to sign immediately, and (6) never require you to use their in-house photographer or pay for training as a condition of representation.

Question 11

Will SLMTA ever contact me through Instagram, WhatsApp, or Gmail?

Accepted Answer

No. All official SLMTA communications come exclusively from @slmta-agency.com email addresses. We will never scout you via Instagram DM, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, TikTok, or any personal social media account. If you receive a message from someone claiming to represent SLMTA through any of those channels, it is not from us — report it to legal@slmta-agency.com.

Question 12

Does SLMTA charge for headshots or require me to use a specific photographer?

Accepted Answer

No. Requiring talent to pay for in-house headshots or use a specific photographer as a condition of representation is one of the most common scam tactics in the industry. SLMTA does not require this. You may use any photographer you choose, and we will never make your representation contingent on purchasing services from us or our affiliates.

Question 13

What should I do if I think I have been scammed by someone impersonating SLMTA?

Do not send any money or personal documents. Contact us immediately at legal@slmta-agency.com with as much detail as possible — the name, handle, phone number, or email address used to contact you. We take impersonation seriously and will report confirmed cases to the appropriate authorities.

What types of work does SLMTA book?

Accepted Answer

SLMTA books talent across fashion (runway and print), commercial (brand campaigns and advertising), editorial (magazine and artistic), fitness (activewear and wellness), lifestyle, TV commercials, tradeshows, live events, voiceover, and international markets. Our International Division, led by Achraf Taoussi, specializes in haute couture and global placements.

Does SLMTA work with talent outside of St. Louis?

Accepted Answer

Yes. SLMTA actively scouts and represents talent across all six of our primary markets: St. Louis, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Miami, and Atlanta. We also work with international talent through our International Affairs Division.

Question 16

What is Fashionista Studio and how does it relate to SLMTA?

Accepted Answer

Fashionista Studio is a sister company founded by SLMTA to develop and train emerging talent who are not yet ready for full agency representation. Graduates of Fashionista Studio are invited to apply for SLMTA representation, creating a clear development pipeline. SLMTA itself is a representation agency — we do not operate as a training school.
